Rinsing your mouth with menthol doesn't cool you down — and you go longer anyway

Swilling (not swallowing) a dilute menthol solution during exercise in the heat improves perceived thermal comfort and extends time-to-exhaustion — even though core body temperature rises identically to a placebo rinse.

Forty minutes into a heat-soaked climb, a rider reaches for the bottle, takes a mouthful, swills it hard against his cheeks, and spits it onto the tarmac without swallowing a drop. He isn't thirsty. He's chasing a sensation — the sharp, cold hit of menthol against the roof of his mouth, gone in three seconds, gone before it could possibly do anything to his actual body temperature. He picked this habit up from a teammate who swore by it on the hottest club rides of summer, and he's never once questioned why something that vanishes in seconds would make any physiological difference at all.

That's the strange part. It doesn't do anything to his actual body temperature. He goes longer anyway.

Section 01What the trial actually found

Mündel and Jones tested this directly in nine healthy, non-heat-acclimatised men cycling at 65% of peak aerobic power in 34°C heat, riding to exhaustion (Mündel & Jones, 2010). Every 10 minutes, riders swilled 25 ml of a dilute 0.01% L(−)-menthol solution around their mouth and spat it out — never swallowed — versus an identical routine with a flavour-matched placebo rinse on a separate visit.

Rectal, or core, temperature rose by an identical 1.7°C in both trials, on the same time course throughout the ride (Mündel & Jones, 2010). Menthol did not cool these riders down in any measurable physiological sense — their bodies were heating up at exactly the same rate whether they rinsed with menthol or plain placebo. And yet eight of the nine riders lasted longer on the menthol trial, for an average 9% increase in time-to-exhaustion versus placebo (Mündel & Jones, 2010).

Riders swilling menthol also rated the same workload as easier, with self-reported perceived exertion running 15% lower than on the placebo rinse, despite their skin and core temperature telling an identical story underneath (Mündel & Jones, 2010). The performance gain is real. The physiological cooling behind it is not.

That combination is the whole finding in miniature: a body running just as hot, on the same clock, feeling like it's working less hard, and lasting measurably longer as a direct result. Nothing about the heat load on these riders changed. What changed was how that heat load registered.

Section 02Why the body and the mind disagree here

Ordinarily, thermal sensation, perceived exertion, and actual core temperature move together — you feel hotter as you get hotter, and you feel closer to your limit as your body genuinely nears it. That's the whole point of having these sensations: they're supposed to be an honest read-out of what's happening inside you, so you can regulate your effort accordingly.

Menthol breaks that link on purpose, from the outside. It doesn't lower your core temperature and it doesn't reduce the metabolic heat your muscles are producing. It intercepts the sensory signal your brain uses as one of its inputs for "how bad is this right now" and reports something cooler than reality. Your physiology keeps heating up on schedule. Your perception of that physiology gets a discount.

Section 03Why a sensation with no temperature change still works

Your mouth is lined with cold-sensitive receptors — the same TRPM8 receptor family that fires when you bite into something minty. Menthol binds directly to that receptor and triggers a cold signal to the brain, independent of whatever the actual temperature of your mouth, skin, or core happens to be. It's a chemical trick on the sensor, not a change in the thing being sensed.

During hard exercise in the heat, your brain is constantly weighing rising thermal discomfort against the effort you're putting in, and that discomfort signal is a real input into how hard you're willing to keep pushing. Menthol doesn't touch the actual heat load your body is under. It touches the sensory read-out your brain uses to decide when things feel unbearable. Trick that read-out into reporting "cooler than this actually is," even for a few seconds at a time, and you buy yourself a little more tolerance for the same real heat strain — repeated every 10 minutes, that adds up to a measurably longer ride.

Section 04How to actually use it

  1. Swill and spit, never swallow
    The performance effect in the trial came from oral cold receptors firing, not from ingesting menthol. Swallowing it adds nothing and risks stomach discomfort.
  2. Use a dilute solution
    The trial used a mild 0.01% concentration — a splash in a bottle, not a mouthwash-strength dose. Stronger isn't better here; it's just harsher.
  3. Rinse on a schedule, not just when you're struggling
    The trial protocol rinsed every 10 minutes throughout the ride, before discomfort peaked — not as a last-resort rescue when you're already cooked.
  4. Treat it as a comfort lever, not a cooling strategy
    This changes how the heat feels. It does not reduce the actual heat strain on your body, so don't use it as your justification for pushing further into genuinely dangerous heat.
  5. Pair it with real cooling and hydration
    Ice, shade, pre-cooling and adequate fluid intake address the actual physiological heat load. Menthol addresses the perception layered on top. Use both, and don't let one substitute for the other.
  6. Test it in training before you rely on it in a race
    Individual response to menthol varies, and the sensation itself can be more distracting than useful the first time you try it. Rehearse the habit on a hot training ride, not for the first time on race day.

Section 05Where riders get this wrong

The biggest misread is treating a menthol rinse as a cooling strategy. It isn't one. This trial is explicit that core temperature rose identically with or without it — nothing about your actual heat load changes. Riders who lean on menthol instead of real cooling and hydration in genuinely dangerous heat are trading a comfort trick for a safety measure, and that's a bad trade.

The second misread is swallowing it, or using a strong, concentrated dose expecting a bigger effect. The mechanism is oral receptor stimulation on contact — it doesn't scale up by drinking more or going stronger, and a harsh concentration is just unpleasant without adding benefit.

The third is expecting this to work on athletes who are already heat-acclimatised and comfortable in the conditions. The trial used non-heat-acclimatised riders in genuine heat stress — the effect lives specifically in shifting an uncomfortable sensation toward tolerable, not in making an already-comfortable ride feel better still.

The fourth is assuming a bigger dose or a longer swill gives you a bigger benefit. The receptor response menthol triggers is a quick, on-contact chemical signal — it isn't a slow-building effect that scales with exposure time or concentration. A harsher rinse just tastes worse for the same result.

Section 06Applying it with HELIOS

If your skin-temperature trend and recovery data are flagging a harder heat day than usual, that's the app telling you the smarter move is real cooling, more fluid, and backing off — not a mouth rinse that only changes how the effort feels.

This is precisely the distinction the research draws, applied to your own ride rather than a lab protocol: skin temperature and heart rate can tell you the physiological story is getting genuinely serious, well before it's obvious from how the effort merely feels. A perception trick is a poor substitute for reading the data underneath it on the days that data is trying to tell you something.

A menthol mouth rinse — swilled and spat, never swallowed — extended time-to-exhaustion in the heat by 9% in this trial, with eight of nine riders lasting longer, even though core body temperature rose at the exact same rate as it did without menthol. The effect lives entirely in perception: it changes how unbearable the heat feels, not how much heat strain your body is actually under. That makes it a legitimate, low-cost tool for a tough ride — but not a substitute for the cooling and hydration strategies that address the real problem underneath.

It's a cheap trick, and it's an honest one, provided you know exactly what it is. Nine men in a lab in the heat proved that changing how a workload feels, without changing the workload itself, is enough to move real performance. That's worth having in the bottle on a hot day. It's not worth mistaking for a plan.
